History: Sanzo's parents were a government official in his fifties and a daughter of a shop peddler who was just seventeen. His real parents abandoned him when he was just a baby, leaving him in a basket to float away along a river. But before he could drown, Koumyou Sanzo found him. He named the child Kouryuu, which means flow of the river, and brought him back to his temple where he raised him as if he were his own son. For this, Kouryuu came to love and respect him as if he were his own father.
For reasons still unstated in canon, their lives came to be in danger. On that night, Koumyou had the boy come to him. In that moment he made him the bearer of the two sutras that he had thus making the child the new Sanzo. By doing so, he was given a new name...Genjyo Sanzo. Soon after this, the temple was attacked by a gang of youkai. To save the boy, Koumyou jumped in front of an attack and was killed in the process. The sutra that he was wearing at the time was stolen and young Genjyo was left to deal with the aftermath.
At first he was accused of having killed his master to get the scroll until everyone saw the red dot on his forehead. It was a holy mark that could only be given through a divine right. A sure sign he hadn't murdered his master. Thus he was recognized as the 31st Sanzo Priest and he charged himself with finding the stolen sutra that now belonged to him. Taking a gun with him, he left to go to Chang'an.
This journey took him around ten years. During this time he was forced to kill many times in order to defend himself. There were a number of youkai and bandits along the way. All of these either wanted to eat him or use him as a sex toy. It's important to note that at this time he was about eleven or twelve.
Finally he arrived at Chang'an. He went to the Three Aspects to ask for information on the sutra he was looking for but they told him that his eyes were too dead and that he couldn't recognize it. He had to stay there and was forbidden to continue with his task. Frustrated though he was, he obeyed and stayed at the temple, often praying in the temple to avoid the terrible nightmares that plagued his mind whenever he finally slept. However, he didn't actually recite any sutras while he did this.
One night while he was prowling the halls, he came across a man known as Jihaku. He was the Archbishop but he certainly didn't act like one. In fact, he was there smoking. He commented that Sanzo looked like a moon demon and on their second meeting he gave the young man a box of cigarettes even though Sanzo didn't smoke and found the habit disgusting. Soon after this, the temple was attacked and Jihaku defended it, claiming to be the Sanzo that the men were after. He was mortally wounded and died smoking one of his cigarettes. Taking up his place, Sanzo took out the men and became the head of the temple in his place, even taking up the habit of smoking in his honor. The nightmares disappeared and he was able to approach things with a clear head.
A strange voice began to haunt him and he went in search of it. It was irritating and all he wanted was for it to be silenced. So he traveled to where a creature was being kept high up on a mountain in a stone prison. There he found Son Goku. Rather than finishing him off though, he took him under his wing and began to take care of him, even letting him live at the temple with him. And soon after this, he was charged with finding the criminal Cho Gonou. This introduced him to Gojyo as well. Apprehending Gonou, he brought him back to the Aspects who made him change his name. Hakkai was born in that moment and so was the group of Sanzo-ikkou. The two parties went their separate ways until Sanzo was ordered to go to the West after the Minus Wave hit and caused the youkai to lose their sanity.
Together the group traveled until they came to a temple with a group of monks that refused to fight. Sanzo found this to be irritating and actually shocked the monks in return by smoking and drinking while at the temple. He even went so far as to fight the youkai that attacked the place. The reality of the world was that if one didn't fight then one was doomed to die. The group left the temple soon after with Sanzo refusing to be in charge of the place. He had his orders and he couldn't linger there.
This brought them to a monk that was covered in wards. He was going around destroying youkai with a method that was like a man from Sanzo's past. As it turned out, this being and the man were one in the same. After Sanzo had left the temple he'd grown up in, it had been attacked. This man was the only survivor of the incident. He had gone mad since then and had placed a forbidden spell upon himself so that he would kill any youkai that he came across. This included three of the members of the ikkou. Goku himself was almost killed but Sanzo took the blow instead which caused him to die and for Goku's band to shatter. It was Kanzeon Bosatsu who managed to repair the band and save Sanzo so they could continue their mission. Unable to allow further youkai killings to continue, Sanzo himself was forced to kill him just so the man who had once been a friend of his could find peace.
Forward they went until there was an encounter with Yaone. Apparently the group had a price on their heads now and she had been given the task of killing them. It wasn't long after this that Kougaiji showed up with the rest of his party to take everyone away. There was no point in having this fight now. Seeing the strength of him, the group vowed to get stronger so that they would be able to take him down. There was no other way as far as they could tell.
But they were soon delayed by someone known as Chin Yisou. His target was Hakkai since he was a youkai from his past. This was the one who had taken Hakkai's lover and had destroyed the lives of the happy couple. She had been sacrificed to him, something that drove him to insanity. He'd killed so many and that had changed him into a youkai as well. It was the only way that he managed to survive the blow he was given. It was time to pay him back for all of that. As it turned out though, he was more of a doll created from a mahjong tile. Yet, he still haunted Hakkai for everything. The others were the targets used to destroy Hakkai's happiness. Something they couldn't allow and soon they managed to destroy the spirit in order to move on and bring some closer to their companion's past.
To the desert they went. It was the only way to go. Out there they heard of a sutra that was likely to be the one that Sanzo was missing. Going after it meant that he was kidnapped though and it looked like the poison in his system would probably kill him. Not realizing just how stubborn he was to keep going, he managed to get up anyway and was rescued by the others. Sadly, the sutra was lost in the sand as the entire place collapsed completely.
It took some time for everyone to recover from their many injuries but soon they were on the road again. Gojyo met a little boy who had a monster for a brother and they're forced to take out the siblings. This incident happened because someone named Kami-sama had decided to play with them. He was a student of another Sanzo named Ukoku but hadn't been allowed to inherit the sutra for himself. Sanzo remembered him and it seemed that Kami-sama's nature had turned to a childlike madness. With the power of an adult but the mild of a child, he became a dangerous opponent.
The first time they faced him, they were utterly defeated. The group fell into a depression that it seemed they wouldn't be able to break out of. Luckily, Goku forced them all into games of mahjong until they all realized that they couldn't stay like this. They had to keep fighting onwards. Recovering at last, they went to go and face Kami-sama again.
Unlike the time before, they were a formidable team. Nothing could stop them. Even Kami-sama found their teamwork to be something that was terrifying. And really it was the first time they'd truly, truly worked together on something. Doing so meant that they were unstoppable and they finally injured their opponent. Before they could deliver the finishing blow though, the building began to collapse. Having no choice but to escape, they ran from the building and left the man to be buried under the rubble. Once again they had to tend to their injuries and face that they were still wanted dead by youkai all over the world.
The team needed to cross the mountains in order to get to the next stage of their journey. In doing so, they found a youkai who hadn't lost his mind to the minus wave yet. He was even taking care of a group of youkai children who were still innocent. Sadly, the children were losing their minds one by one and he had the sad task of killing them himself just to keep them from having to live a life like that. But he couldn't keep the madness at bay for much longer and the group was forced to see a very good man lose himself to the wave and killed him. It was the most merciful thing they could have done.
Out of the mountains, the team was split up by a river. Goku was left alone to defend a group of villagers from a pack of youkai and eventually had to fight a brainwashed Kougaiji. The others in the meantime were forced to fight off a youkai with the power to cast illusions that eventually would damage the mind so badly a person would die. What he hadn't counted on was the strength of Sanzo will. He forced the Youkai's illusion to shatter and they beat him up. With Yaone and Dokugakuji, they ran to where Goku was fighting Kougaiji. A battle took place and it managed to startle Kougaiji out of being brainwashed. The trio of youkai left and the Sanzo-ikkou went off to continue their journey.
Now the group met a strange duo who happened to be from the west named Hazel and Gat. They were strange enough to begin with but then Hazel actually brought someone back from the dead. Sanzo found nothing good about this and instantly was suspicious of the man as well as finding a great distaste for how he kept approaching them. As it turned out, the man was using youkai souls to bring people back and in doing so could control the people to fight against youkai when he chose to use them. It wasn't much of a life at all. More than that, he was killing off random youkai just to gather their souls to accomplish this. After stopping the man from doing it, Sanzo made a bet with him. That they would stop the minus wave before Hazel could kill off all the demons.
As it turned out, the mad scientist for Kougaiji's step-mother was actually Ukoku. He went up to Hazel, whom he had history with, and told him how Goku wasn't just any youkai. He was a monster born from the Earth and thus had the power more like a god. That band around his head was the thing that was keeping him sane. He had to be stopped. Of course, Hazel listened and they went to go and find a way to see if it was true. Right when he was about to back out on it though, Ukoku attacked Goku right in front of Sanzo. This caused Sanzo to panic since he thought someone precious to him had been killed. Rather than staying to find out what happened or anything like that, he froze completely. Hakkai actually had to smack him to pull him out of it and in that moment Sanzo figured out who did this and ran away to chase after Ukoku. This left Hakkai and Gojyo behind to remove the band just to save Goku's life and then to find a way to stop him.
Returning, Sanzo found that he hadn't been there for the others when he should have been. So the team split up and Sanzo ended up traveling with Hazel. The two groups ended up in the same desert. Sanzo, Hazel, and Gat with the humans while Hakkai, Gojyo, and Goku were with the youkai. Realizing something was wrong, Sanzo showed Hazel just what humans could be like. That this was bigger than just a fight against the youkai. Another battle took place and both groups reunited just in time to battle against Ukoku.
This wasn't an easy task since Ukoku had a sutra that denied the existence of things. Sanzo himself was almost consumed by it before his team stepped in. Gat was killed during this fight and it was revealed that Hazel actually had the soul of a demon inside of him. The two sides battled but it seemed like Hazel was lost for good. It was as if nothing in the world could stop Ukoku. Then, somehow, they managed to start gaining power and Hazel actually fought against him, coming back to himself. Sadly, Hazel was thrown to his doom and Ukoku escaped. The Sanzo-ikkou were left to once again recover from their injuries but were happy to be together again.
They were last seen finally arriving in India after their long travels from China. There was still a lot of traveling to go but it seemed like they weren't being as hunted anymore. What that meant was still a mystery that they had to work out.
Personality: Sanzo is someone who is rarely ever open with anyone in the world. This even includes his companions. He tends to prefer to be left alone to do his own thing and finds most things around him to be rather irritating at best. Much of the time, he will sit and read a newspaper when there is a moment of peace, a cup of tea or a thing of beer nearby. Typically, this makes him seem very grumpy and moody and he becomes worse when the fact is pointed out to him. Little things can get on his nerves which can lead to an outburst from him of a negative nature.
To most situations, he can seem very indifferent and will even avoid entering a fight in the beginning. But once he loses his temper, all hell will break loose. That said, he can appear lazy, avoiding most work and using the excuse of being Sanzo during moments where people wonder why he always gets the bed. He's a rational thinker though, able to come up with logical reasons to explain things or to decide on how he will view a situation.
Gojyo often calls him an old man for how he acts. Really, it's rather accurate all things considered. He can be grumpy like one, reads the newspaper with glasses on, and sits back drinking tea and smoking. Calling him this though is sure to cause a gun to be pointed in your general direction along with a death threat. More so if doing so is interrupting the quiet around him or disrupting his chance to go to sleep early. Of course this means that he's yelling and causing chaos too but that's really not the point at all. He's always convinced that he's right so of course he's going to show those idiots just who is the boss of the situation.
Now, it should be noted that he is, in fact, a monk. The highest ranking for a Buddhist monk, a Sanzo. What this should mean is that he's a vegetarian who is a pacifist and abstains from vices like swearing, drinking, smoking, and gambling. Not likely. Many are shocked to find out that he does the opposite of all of these things. He even has a rather cool view on things and finds pacifists to be irritating. He often finds animals and children to be bothersome as well but will tolerate them when he's around them.
He's not entirely a jerk. Though he would hate to admit to it, he cares deeply about his companions. Often he refers to them as his servants and never acts grateful for their help but the reality is that they're precious to him. Gojyo and Hakkai are good friends to him and Goku is sort of like a son. He's terribly possessive of all of them and will become livid if people try to attack his people. If someone were to ask about his relationship though, he wouldn't admit to any kind of feelings towards them. Instead, he would tell people that they're annoying and bothersome. People have to look under the surface of things in order to see that he would really do anything for them. It seems like he just doesn't want to admit that he cares because everyone he's cared about has died.
Despite how gruff he is, he is quick to defend one of them when they're in danger. He's gone so far as to sacrifice his own life for Goku. No one is allowed to mess with them except for him. And he's sure to threaten Gojyo and Goku with killing them and firing his gun off in their general direction. Yet, he would never actually kill any of them unless there was no other choice.
Of the three though, it's clear that Goku is the one he cares about the most. He's raised him since finding him in that prison. They really are like a family and either one will completely lose it if the other is put on the verge of death or killed. There is a bond between them that others don't seem to grasp but it looks like Sanzo is the only one who really has the power to control the beast inside of the that youthful body. They have made a promise to live to be with each other always. So when it looked like Goku was killed right before his eyes, Sanzo froze. He had no idea what he was going to do and his mind shut down. Hakkai literally had to slap him to bring him out of it and his first thought in that moment was to get his revenge.
As cruel as he can seem, he is passionate about doing the right thing. He has a strong sense of self and morals and it's next to impossible to fool him for long. And his will is not something to be messed with. This is a man who literally forced someone out of his mind just by willing himself to be strong enough to live. This is thanks to his master. He knows he has to continue on for all those around him and is determined to be there for them and to save them. When he gets serious about a situation, there really isn't much of anything that can stop him. Not even a hoard of demons meant to kill him off for good. Sanzo has a will to live so powerful that he literally shocks everyone with the things that he will manage to survive or fight through in order to be there for others.
Sometimes doing what is right means that he will seemingly sacrifice another person. At one point, he tells Hazel to go ahead and kill the youkai child. Of course, he doesn't and the child escapes. All to show just what it would mean to slaughter an innocent child and to stain one's hands with blood. He's had to do so himself many times but he will avoid killing those that are innocent. If someone really can't fight then he will defend them if he can. But the reality is that he would rather inspire others to fight for themselves. This is their world and they can't just sit back and expect others to save them all the time. One thing he refuses to be is a hero. That isn't at all what he is.
He prefers the simple things in life. He really doesn't need the fame and the rewards that come with his name. In fact, it's a turn-off in his mind and he will just think about how he would rather be outside sleeping on the forest floor. This probably comes from being a Buddhist and it's one of the things he tends to stick to. That said, he's not afraid to spend the vast amounts of money that he's given for his travels. Nope, he will flash that card wherever he goes and just toss the money out to get what he wants. Namely, a room and lots of food and drink.
This is not your typical monk. He's short-tempered and violent who smokes and drinks without a second though. His closest friends happen to be youkai but it's clear he doesn't mind being the only human in the group. Don't mess with his people though you will never get him to actually admit aloud that he cares about them. That's not something he will ever confess to. Stubborn to the end, he just will not die. Sanzo may not be a hero but he really is a good man.
Other: He is a smoker who prefers to smoke filtered Marlboro Reds. Gojyo and Sanzo don't like to share cigarettes since they smoke other brands. He also tends to smoke more when he's stressed or upset about something. Some of his other habits also happen to include wearing reading glasses when looking at the newspaper, going to bed early, and drinking tea during calmer moments. Cooking and cleaning are not things that he'll do and he will literally leave before he has to do either of them. That goes for shopping too. Also, he has a love for mayonnaise that extends to him even thinking it's a good idea to put it into ramen.

First Person (entry type):
I don't give a damn what Hakkai says, I'm killing those two today. Those two little bastards were loud and obnoxious all morning long before that kappa stole the card. If he spends one cent on women, I'm going to put a bullet between his legs so he can remember what that card is meant for.
One warning to all of you: First person to steal my card to pay for shit like that gets a bullet. Two if I catch you doing it. That's your only warning. I don't care if you think Buddhists don't use guns. I do.
[He puts out the cigarette he had going and lights up another, muttering as he does.]
That bastard, Hakkai...telling me that I'm smoking too much and smiling while he says that he just would hate to see something go up in flames. Damn it. I'm not smoking too much.
[He tosses his lighter onto the table and right then a string of cuss words flowing out of his mouth.]
Damn it, you little monkey! That was my coffee! Get your ass back here so I can shoot you a good one! Now we have to waste time getting my clothes cleaned up! And that burned!
[And he's firing bullets and chasing after Goku.]
Third Person:
India. They'd finally reached that destination.
Sanzo pulled in the smoke from his cigarette as he looked around the village they'd decided to stay in. The air here was warm, a good reason to have the door open. Somewhere below the other three were out getting supplies for their journey. Honestly, he hadn't wanted to stop here. It had seemed too troublesome to take a break. At least until Hakkai had pointed out that Gojyo and Goku would be less obnoxious if they had a chance to have a good meal and some real sleep before they moved on. Honestly, he was sure that the intent had been to force him to get some rest but he hadn't asked. He didn't want to know.
They'd been through a lot together. Numerous battles, terrible trials. Sometimes he wondered what he would do without the other three. No, he knew already and didn't want to think about that.
Gojyo was loud and obnoxious. He had a cocky attitude that could piss him off in a heartbeat. They spent most of their time arguing with each other. That idiot had a habit of pointing out that he had the habits of an old man while he found Gojyo's womanizing disgusting. Yet, there was no denying in Sanzo's mind that the redhead was a powerful asset to the team. They needed that confidence and that need to stand up for the others. Irritating as it was, he could appreciate that stubbornness. Valued it. Letting out a puff of smoke, he noted that the kappa needed better taste in cigarettes if nothing else.
Hakkai had a terrible personality. Always smiling to hide the pain that he was feeling. It really served to piss him off a lot. Why bother to bury down the pain like that? Why hide it? He was aware of what that man had been through and had a certain bond with him because of it. Still, he was a powerful healer and had a talent for knowing what to say to calm him down. It had been Hakkai who had actually talked him into letting the group stay here. He cared about his friends and wanted to make sure that they were all well rested.
Then there was Goku.
Sanzo remembered the day he found him well. That voice had been echoing through his mind. He'd been so sure that he would just kill the person for being so annoying. Yet when he saw that face, he changed his mind entirely. It was those eyes that really got to him. They'd been so innocent. There was no way that he could just leave Goku in that prison to suffer for another five hundred years. So he'd freed him and took him under his wing.
He wanted to give Goku the world. To see him thrive and find happiness. Yes, he wanted it for all of them but for Goku especially. He could remember the day he'd thought that he was dead, when Ukoku had attacked him. It had felt like his entire world had fallen apart. Where was he supposed to go from there if he lost him? That innocent smile and that endless love of life.
No, he couldn't do anything without them. He needed each and every one of them. They were his and he wasn't going to let anyone take them from him. It probably meant that he cared but he didn't want to admit to that. People that he cared about died. If he admitted that he cared then that much would become realized. Like how he'd almost lost Goku.
Behind him, he heard the door open. When the hell had they gotten back? Sanzo looked over to see them walking in, Gojyo and Goku as loud as ever while Hakkai just smiled in the background. The silence had been shattered with their arrival and he could feel a dull pounding in his head that came from being annoyed with the situation. His eye twitched and he waited in vain for them to shut up. Naturally, waiting was pointless and soon the noise level was getting to him.
Out of nowhere he had his gun out and cocked.
"Shut up before I put a bullet in both your heads," he snarled. It was just an ordinary day for the four of them. This pattern made him feel comfortable and at ease.
He wouldn't be anywhere without these three. They were precious to him. His friends. And there was no way in hell that he was going to lose them.
